Tomato Bhindi Sabzi Recipe is a delicious curry recipe served as a side dish with roti or paratha or steamed rice. This is simple and mouth watering stir-fried bhindi in spicy gravy made from tomato, ginger, garlic, onion and Indian spices. You can serve the fried bhindi without gravy as a side dish with paratha.

For Gravy———

  • Garam Masala – 1 tbsp
  • Red Chili Powder – 1/2 tbsp
  • Turmeric Powder – 1/4 tbsp
  • Salt as per taste
  • Oil 3-4 tbsp
  • Chopped Tomato – 11/2 cup
  • Chopped Ginger – 1/4 tbsp
  • Chopped Garlic – 1/2 tbsp
  • Cumin Seed – 1/2 tbsp
  • Asafoetida – a pinch
  • Coriander Powder – 1 tbsp
  • Sugar – 1/4 tbsp
  • Onion Paste – 1 cup

For Frying Bhindi———

  • Bhindi or Okra or Lady Finger ( remove stalk from both ends and cut in to half ) – 11/2 cup
  • Besan or Gram Flour – 1/4 cup
  • Salt – 1/2 tbsp
  • Coarsely Ground Cumin Powder or Jeera – 1 tbsp
  • Dry Mango Powder or Amchoor – 1/2 tbsp
  • Coarsely Ground Fennel Seed or Sauf – 1 tbsp
  • Coriander Powder – tbsp
  • Red Chili Powder – 1/2 tbsp
  • Oil for frying


  • In a grinder, add tomato, garlic and ginger, grind it and make a fine paste, keep aside.
  • Heat the 4-5 tbsp of oil in kadhi on medium flame, add cumin seed and asafoetida or hing.
  • Stir for few seconds now add onion paste and mix well.
  • Fry it till onion paste turns little golden brown.
  • After that you add coriander powder, turmeric powder, red chili powder, salt and sugar, mix well.
  • Stir fry for 3-4 seconds and add tomato-ginger puree.
  • Cook the tomato for about 4-5 minute or till the oil leaves the sides of the kadai.
  • Add garam masala powder and mix it well.
  • Now gravy is ready and keep aside.
  • For frying bhindi:—–
  • In a bowl, add the bhindi, salt, cumin seed, dry mango powder, fennel, coriander powder, red chili powder and besan, mix it well.
  • Add the water slowly bhindi should be nicely coated with spicy mixture.
  • Heat the oil in a pan on medium flame, put coated bhindi one by one to the oil.
  • Fry it till coated bhindi turns little golden brown on both sides.
  • Take them out over napkin or paper towel ( you can serve the fried bhindi without gravy as a side dish).
  • Pour the tomato-onion base spicy gravy in serving bowl and add fried bhindi.
  • Serve hot tomato bhindi sabzi with roti, paratha or steamed rice.
